Darien YMCA

Darien YMCA

Darien YMCA is a recreational sports, fitness and school for early childhood development. In 2012, the facility underwent major renovations to make it more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Mr. Chris McCagg from James G. Rogers Architects was interviewed to find out why Luminis was chosen for the new two-story glass lobby of this revitalized facility. "Luminis was selected for this project because the Prisma family of pendants had numerous features such as acrylic diffusers, lenses and aluminum housing that could be interchanged," McCagg says. "The available options offered our team design flexibility while creating maintenance efficiencies for the Y staff."

AESTHETICS & SOPHISTICATION

Luminis pendants were predominately used in the newly renovated entrance, which greets visitors with a dramatic two-story glass lobby featuring exposed wood trusses and decking. The challenge was to find a light fixture that would complement the contemporary feel of the entrance. "We were looking for a fixture that was "less utilitarian", the Prisma pendant was chosen because its aesthetics provide subtle sophistication while complimenting the warmth of the wood trusses and decking found in the YMCA´s lobby," McCagg says. "Furthermore, the intent of the lighting was to achieve specific lighting levels within double height spaces and the Prisma´s are doing just that."

From a performance standpoint, the Prisma pendants are performing as expected. The lighting is also contributing to the YMCA´s objective of transforming the facility into a highly efficient system with a reduced carbon footprint. "To take advantage of daylight harvesting from skylights and north facing windows, the Prisma fixtures were installed with a dimming ballast," McCagg says. "The YMCA is very satisfied with the outcome. The pendants have visual appeal and also contribute to reducing energy consumption of the facility.
